Robert Lee Gray, 83, of Amherst, retired business manager in physics and astronomy, died March 18.
Born in Monessen, Pa., he earned his baccalaureate degree at California State Teachers College in Pennsylvania.
A Korean War veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1951-55 as an electronic technician aboard the U.S.S. Oriskany.
He joined the physics and astronomy department in 1969 as an instructor of physics. In 1977, he was named a lecturer “A” and staff associate. He was particularly interested in developing effective science education techniques for use by middle and high school teachers. In 1988 he received the Chancellor’s Citation. He wrote self-help textbooks on physics, including, “Physics Problems: Mechanics and Heat” published in 1974.
After retiring in 1993, he moved to Torrance, Calif., to live with his companion Marie Peck. After she died in early 2012, he moved back to Massachusetts.
He leaves his seven children, Molly Gray of Northampton, Christopher Gray of Granby, Susanne Gray Stankowski of Deerfield, Don Gray of Santa Fe, N.M., Jen Gray of Northampton, Jonathan Gray of Palm Springs, Calif., and Katie Gray of Holyoke, and by Marie’s daughters Cathy Peck of Los Angeles, and Nancy Kuttler of Torrance, Calif., and their spouses and partners. He also leaves many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family will hold private services and interment at the Massachusetts Veterans Cemetery in Agawam.
