Paul Berube, 80, professor emeritus of art, died Sept. 5 at his home in Pelham.

Born in New Bedford, he was a graduate of Bowdoin College, the Rhode Island School of Design and the University of Southern California.

Originally trained as a potter, he joined the faculty in 1964 as an instructor and was appointed an assistant professor in 1967. He was promoted to associate professor in 1972 and professor in 1978. He served as acting chair in 1981 and 1984. He retired in 2000 and had a brief post-retirement appointment in 2009.

His wife Gail died previously. He leaves behind two children, Jon Berube of Pelham, and Karen DiPersia of Princeton, New Jersey, as well as five grandchildren, Jon C. and Hannah Berube, and Sofia, Vanessa, and Gaetano DiPersia.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
