Loretta M. Eiben, 78, of Amherst, a former assistant professor of medical surgery in the School of Nursing, died March 29 at the Center for Extended Care following a long illness.
Born in Monticello, Iowa, where she graduated from high school, she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing at the University of Iowa.
She began her campus employment as a graduate nurse in the Infirmary in 1961. Three years later, she was appointed nursing services supervisor. She resigned in 1972 as an assistant professor in the School of Nursing.
She leaves her husband, carl Eiben; a son, David, of Barre; a daughter, Ann Rocco, of Shaker Heights, Ohio; a sister, two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 24 at 1 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church.
