Dorothy T. “Theresa” Whitney, 85, of Wells, Maine, and formerly of Amherst and Belchertown, a retired administrative assistant in the Controller’s Office, died June 15 in York Hospital in Maine.
Born in Boston, she grew up in Roxbury and attended high school in the city.
Shortly thereafter, she met and married Eugene P. Whitney, from Medford, and moved to Amherst, where they raised five children.
After her children were grown, she went into professional life by running a local telephone answering service for several years. Following that, she worked on campus for nearly 21 years, first with Financial Services and later with the Controller’s Office. She retired in 1990.
She moved to Wells in 2008.
Her husband died in 1995.
She leaves her sons James Whitney of Waterbury, Conn., Richard Whitney of Wells; Paul and his wife Susan Whitney of Falls Church, Va., daughter Jayne and her husband Peter Krause of Hadley, daughter Suzanne W. Ragland of Northport, Fla., a brother and two sisters-in-law, eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are Friday, June 20 from 5-8 p.m. at the Douglass Funeral Service, Amherst.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, June 21, at 10 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Church, Belchertown, with burial following in St. Brigid’s Cemetery, Hadley
Donations in her name may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
