Beatrice Irene Smith, 97, a retired senior clerk stenographer and Pelham''s oldest resident, died June 28 in Cozy Corner Nursing Home in Sunderland after a brief illness.
Born in North Prescott, she grew up in Greenwich, where her family had a dairy and poultry farm. The family moved to Pelham in 1929 after the creation of the Quabbin Reservoir, which submerged Greenwich.
She attended school in Athol and graduated from Belchertown High School and later from the former Northampton Commercial College.
She joined the Massachusetts State College staff in 1934 and worked at the School of Agriculture’s farm for 37 years until her retirement in 1971.
She leaves her godson, Daniel Correia, of Belchertown, who was one of her caregivers.
