Alice Howell Friedman, 91, of Amherst, professor emerita of nursing, died Jan. 14.
She grew up on military bases in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia and the Panama Canal Zone and earned a nursing diploma at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Following nursing school, she moved to New York City and received a bachelor’s degree from Columbia Teachers College. She moved back to Boston and became a visiting nurse serving low-income areas in the city.
In 1967, her husband Harvey accepted a faculty appointment in labor studies at UMass Amherst and she took a position teaching public health nursing. She retired from the faculty in 1984 and worked as a staff assistant in Community Relations and Special Events in 1986-87.
The family will welcome friends on Saturday, Jan. 18 from 6-8 p.m., and Sunday, Jan. 19 from 1-5 p.m. at Applewood for a combined open house and Shiva.
Memorial donations may be made to the College of Nursing and to the Hospice at Fisher House.
