Sonia Nieto, professor emerita of language, literacy and culture in the College of Education, was the featured speaker at Rhode Island College’s undergraduate commencement ceremony on May 13. Nieto also was awarded an honorary degree in education by the Providence school.
Called “a champion for inclusiveness in education, with an impressive track record of activism and advocacy” by RIC President Frank D. Sánchez, Nieto is a leading expert on multicultural education, teacher education and the education of students of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. She has written or edited 11 books and dozens of book chapters and journal articles, as well as the memoir “Brooklyn Dreams: My Life in Public Education.”
Nieto previously was awarded honorary degrees by Syracuse University, Duquesne University, Manhattanville College, DePaul University, Bridgewater State College and Lesley University.
