A recording of the linguistics department’s Freeman Lecture, presented Feb. 17 by Stanford University linguistics professor John Rickford, will be broadcast on the New England Public Radio News Network on Saturday, June 17 at 7 p.m. as part of its “Speakers Forum.”

In his talk titled “Justice for Jeantel (and Trayvon): Fighting Dialect Prejudice in Courtrooms and Beyond,” Rickford delves into vernacular English to show how differences in language can lead to distrust and disregard between communities. Rickford concludes by offering solutions to help bridge linguistic gaps across cultures.

He is the author of several books on language and culture, including African American, Creole and Other Vernacular Englishes: A Bibliographic Resource.
