Mount Holyoke Physicist to Speak on Women in Science

November 12, 2013

Kathy Aidala, associate professor of physics at Mount Holyoke College, will discuss “Why Aren't More Women in Science?” at a STEM Education seminar on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 4 p.m. in 138 Hasbrouck Lab.

Aidala will  examine the differences among the sciences and the assumptions people often make to answer this broad and complex question. Does society actively or passively discourage women from pursuing careers in science? Can bias and discrimination explain the difference? Are there biological differences in ability, personality, or career preferences? She will present some of the more compelling evidence that supports or refutes the various arguments and discuss what Mount Holyoke College does to encourage the participation of women in the physical sciences.
