Stephen Malkin, Distinguished Professor and head of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, received the 2004 William T. Ennor Manufacturing Technology Award in November from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

The award is "for his research contributions leading to a comprehensive fundamental understanding of grinding and abrasive machining processes, for developing enabling technologies to enhance the efficiency of their use in industry, and for taking a leading role in the transformation of grinding and abrasive machining from an empirical craft to an applied science."

The award was presented at the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress in California. The William T. Ennor Manufacturing Technology Award was established in 1990 by the ASME Manufacturing Engineering Division and the Alcoa Company to recognize an individual or team for developing or contributing significantly to an innovative manufacturing technology, the implementation of which has resulted in substantial economic or societal benefits.
