Robert MacWright joined the Office of Commercial Ventures and Intellectual Property (CVIP) as director on March 3.
MacWright has been involved in academic technology transfer since 1985. He previously served as director of academic technology transfer programs at Rutgers University, the University of Virginia and the Salk Institute. He is also a registered patent attorney and has practiced law with three firms: Kenyon & Kenyon; Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, and Frommer, Lawrence & Haug. In that capacity he represented many academic institutions, biotechnology companies and venture funds.
He received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from Rutgers and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and received his law degree from Rutgers Law-Newark.
MacWright is leading a team of six CVIP professionals and oversees all aspects of invention protection, promotion, and licensing at the campus. In addition, through coordination with the UMass system CVIP, he will support UMass Amherst entrepreneurs and foster startup company creation by faculty.
