Lewis Black, Russell Simmons headline First Week events

By Ed Blaguszewski

When students return to the University of Massachusetts Amherst this weekend, they can look forward to First Week 2004 activities that feature two headliners—comedian Lewis Black from The Daily Show on Comedy Central and Russell Simmons, the “king of hip hop” and founder of Def Jam Records. Students can also take an exclusive, late-night trip to the Hampshire Mall or hang out at block parties in downtown Amherst.

First Week 2004 is designed to help first-year and returning students meet new people and foster a spirit of cooperation and community as the fall semester begins. The full slate of events also includes Minutemania (an official welcome to the Class of 2008) at the Mullins Center; late-night dining; and the first home football game of the year under the lights at Warren G. McGuirk Stadium, followed by fireworks.

Press credentials are required to conduct interviews and cover the performances of Lewis Black on Monday, Sept. 6, and Russell Simmons on Wednesday, Sept. 8. To make arrangements, contact Ed Blaguszewski at 413-545-2986 or e-mail edblag@admin.umass.edu. Except for the press, a UMass student ID and a ticket are required for admission to the Black and Russell performances.
