Lateef to be honored at FAC’s ‘tropical fantasy’ gala

Internationally celebrated jazz artist and educator Yusef Lateef will be honored at the 18th Annual Friends of the Fine Arts Center gala and auction on Saturday, Feb. 3, 6:30-11:30 in the Campus Center Auditorium.

The theme of this year’s event, which benefits artist community educational residencies, is “Tropical Fantasy.” Island-inspired food, exotic cocktails and sizzling auctions and entertainment will bring a touch of paradise to the Campus Center.

The highlight of the event will be the presentation of the Artist of the Year Award to Lateef, a Grammy Award-winning composer, performer, recording artist, author, educator and philosopher who taught at the Five Colleges for more than 14 years until his retirement in 2002. He earned his doctorate through the School of Education in 1975.

Boston’s Hip Pocket Orchestra will provide the music and patrons can bid on items in silent and live auctions.

Tickets are $100 per person, which includes a complimentary cocktail, reserved seating and a $25 tax-deductible contribution.
