Key Dates as the Academic Year Begins
AMHERST, Mass. - The following is a list of key dates related to the first week of the Fall 2002 semester at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Sun., Sept. 1 – Opening Day. Residence halls open to new students, with arrivals staggered to prevent traffic tie-ups. Dormitory check-in times are 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. Hampshire, Berkshire, Franklin, and Worcester dining commons open. Family members are invited to enjoy a complimentary brunch, 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., or complimentary dinner, 4 –7 p.m. Special driving and parking regulations will be posted.
The New Students Convocation will be held at the Mullins Center at 8 p.m. New students will be welcomed to the campus community by Chancellor John V. Lombardi, football coach Mark Whipple, and President-Elect Hal Lane of the Alumni Association, among others. There will also be performances by the UMass cheerleaders, Minuteman Marching Band, and Doo-Wop Shop. First Night Activities will be held in the Campus Center following convocation.
Mon., Sept. 2 – Labor Day. Residence halls open to returning students. Dormitory check-in times are 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.
Tues., Sept. 3 – Registration Day. Last day to check in at residence halls, 10 a.m. – 5p.m. New-student orientation will be held for those who did not attend summer programs.
Wed., Sept. 4 – First day of classes.
