Harper Delivers Keynote at Visual Anthropology Conference

Krista Harper

Krista Harper, associate professor of anthropology and public policy, gave the invited keynote address at “Beyond the Lens,” the 2014 Futures of Visual Anthropology conference held April 3-4 at Temple University in Philadelphia.

Her talk, titled “Studying and Transforming Urban Environments through Participatory Visual and Digital Research,” explored how visual and digital research methods, such as PhotoVoice and participatory mapping, provide new ways for anthropologists to forge knowledge about urban environments.

The conference featured two days of panels, installations, roundtables and workshops to advance a collective discussion on collaboration, innovation and public engagement within visual scholarship.

Harper is co-author with Aline Gubrium, associate professor of public health,  of “Participatory Visual and Digital Methods,” published last year by Left Coast Press.
