Michael Grabscheid of Amherst named director of Outreach Marketing and Communications, according to Vice Provost Sharon Fross.
Grabscheid, who begins his new duties Sept. 26, will lead a newly unified effort to market the capacity and resources of Outreach units, including Continuing Education, UMass Extension, University With Walls, WFCR-FM and the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education Institute.
Grabscheid has nearly two decades of executive-level experience in areas such as market research, creative services and public and media relations, and in businesses as varied as healthcare information technology, promotion of alternative energy, data security and 3-D optics.
He most recently served as vice president for marketing and business development for Zograph Corporation, a developer of 3-D imaging products and services in Northampton; and vice-president for Marketing Lumigent Technologies of Acton. He also headed marketing efforts for healthcare giant McKesson, Inc. of Atlanta, and served as executive director of the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association.
He holds degrees in mathematics and engineering from Trinity College in Hartford, and an MBA degree from the School of Management.
Fross said that Grabscheid’s mission will be, in part, to generate much-needed information on how the campus can most effectively serve external audiences in the Commonwealth with sustainable Outreach programs.
“Michael Grabscheid will lead our effort to meaningfully and accurately gauge the needs of the people and communities of Massachusetts with respect to the resources and capacity of UMass, and will be instrumental in identifying the ways in which we can meet those needs with new programs and a new vision,” said Fross.
