Former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft to Speak April 16 at UMass Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. – Former U.S. attorney general John Ashcroft will be the featured speaker at “The Future of America and the GOP: Insights from an Esteemed Political Figure” on Wednesday, April 16 at 8 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The event is sponsored by the UMass Republican Club.

Ashcroft served as governor of Missouri from 1985-93 before his election to the U.S. Senate in 1994. After his re-election defeat in 2000, he was nominated for the post of attorney general by President-elect George W. Bush. Following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Ashcroft was a strong proponent of the USA Patriot Act. He stepped down as attorney general in 2004 and currently chairs The Ashcroft Group, LLC, a Virginia-based consulting firm he formed in 2005.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
