Five College Art Class Puts Student Work on Display

“FIVE,” an exhibition of work by 15 students in the Five College Advanced Studio Seminar, will be on view Dec. 6-10 at the Herter Gallery.

The students worked with New York City painter and educator Jaya Howey. Their weekly assignments were critiqued by Howey and fellow students in classes held at Hampshire College. Readings, class discussions, film screenings and field trips rounded out the course, which also included a daylong visit to the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art.

“This particular group of students is deeply engaged with their work and are thoroughly invested in their role as aspiring artists,” says Howey. “They all engage with the course in an enthusiastic and meaningful way.”

An opening reception for the show will be held on Friday, Dec. 6 from 5-7 p.m. The gallery is open weekdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

UMass Amherst students Caitlin Halloran, Benjamin Mendez, Michael Moore and Shauna Purpura are among the exhibitors.
