AMHERST, Mass. – Move-in for the 4,600 members of the entering class at the University of Massachusetts Amherst begins on Friday, Aug. 30 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The rest of the 13,323 on-campus residents are scheduled to arrive on Sunday, Sept. 1, and Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 2.
Orientation programming for new students is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 31 through Sunday, Sept. 1.
Centralized check-in points are being used again this year. South side area residents will check in near McGuirk Alumni Stadium while students in other living areas on the east side of campus will check in at Parking Lot 44 behind the North Apartments.
After students check-in during their assigned time slots, they will be sent to unloading areas where student volunteers will help them unload their cars and bring their belongings to their rooms. Unloaded cars will be directed immediately to nearby parking lots to keep traffic flowing smoothly.
For the first time, Residential Life is partnering with University and Student Services, a professional moving company, to assist students in some densely populated or tightly situated areas of campus, such as the Southwest towers and the new Commonwealth Honors College Residential Community.
On Sunday, Sept. 1, Commonwealth Avenue in front of the Commonwealth Honors College Residential Community, traffic will be moved to the southbound lanes for two-way travel while the northbound lanes will be used as an unloading zone for students moving into the complex.
Since students have been given specific routes to the check-in stations, there may be additional traffic on Route 116 north and south, Meadow, Triangle and North Pleasant streets and Stadium Drive.
University Drive will be closed to through traffic from Massachusetts Avenue to Amity Street on Friday, Aug. 30 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday, Sept. 1 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Drivers may use Amity Street or Rocky Hill Road and all businesses will have access to University Drive.
Also on Friday and Sunday, Sunset Avenue will be one-way southbound during move-in.
