AMHERST, Mass. – Move-in for 3,800 members of the entering class at the University of Massachusetts Amherst begins on Friday, Aug. 29 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Transfer students and North Apartments residents are to arrive between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m on Saturday. The rest of the 13,000 on-campus residents are scheduled to arrive on Sunday, Aug. 31.
Chancellor Kumble R. Subbaswamy is planning two visits to students and their families during move-in. On Friday, Aug. 29, from 10 a.m. to noon he will begin on the west side of campus and on Sunday, Aug. 31 from 10 a.m. to noon he will begin on the east side of campus.
Orientation programming for new students is scheduled through Monday, Sept. 1.
Centralized check-in points are being used again this year. South side area residents will check in near McGuirk Alumni Stadium while students in other living areas on the east side of campus will check in at Parking Lot 44 behind the North Apartments.
After students check-in during their assigned time slots, they will be sent to unloading areas where student volunteers will help them unload their cars and bring their belongings to their rooms. Unloaded cars will be directed immediately to nearby parking lots to keep traffic flowing smoothly.
Residential Life is partnering with University and Student Services, a professional moving company, to assist students in some densely populated or tightly situated areas of campus, such as the Southwest towers and the Commonwealth Honors College Residential Community.
On Friday, Aug. 29, vehicles will be prohibited from traveling southbound on University Drive from Massachusetts Avenue to Amity Street between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. During this time, drivers are advised to use Route 116, Rocky Hill Road or North Pleasant Street to access Amity Street and the southern end of University Drive.
Beginning at 7 a.m. on both Friday, Aug. 29, and Sunday, Aug. 31, northbound traffic will be prohibited on University Drive starting at Amity Street and on Sunset Avenue starting at Fearing Street. Regular traffic patterns on University Drive and Sunset Avenue will resume at 4 p.m. on Friday, and at 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Also on Sunday, Aug. 31, all traffic on Commonwealth Avenue in front of the Commonwealth Honors College Residential Community will be moved to the southbound lanes for two-way travel while the northbound lanes will be used as an unloading zone for students moving into the complex.
