AMHERST, Mass. - A group of University of Massachusetts engineering students will launch a concrete canoe onto the Campus Pond at approximately 5 p.m. on April 15.
Following its maiden voyage at UMass, the vessel is scheduled to participate in a regional competition April 18-19 at the University of Vermont, says team member Robert Ryan, a junior. Regional winners will go on to a national competition in Rapid City, S.D., in June. Canoes will be judged for design, construction, and race standings. The competition is sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers and Master Builders Technologies, Inc.
For the UMass entry, 10 team members logged hundreds of hours designing and constructing the canoe, which is dubbed the Minutemaniac, Ryan said.
