Carolyn M. Larrabee has been named the new director of the Student Legal Services Office (SLSO) and will begin her new duties on July 31.

The SLSO is a student-funded law office providing legal assistance to fee-paying UMass Amherst students and student groups. Located in the Campus Center, it offers free and confidential advice and or referrals in most legal matters affecting students, assisting them to identify and solve their legal problems

Larrabee has experience in academic, criminal and private legal practice. She served as director of student legal services at Pennsylvania State University from March 2010 to August 2013. Larrabee opened and ran a general practice office with an annual budget of $225,000 that provided legal advice for students at the University Park campus. She also developed an outreach program for students on her campus and across the state system.

She comes to UMass Amherst from the Fairfax County public schools in Falls Church, Va., where she has been serving as a staff attorney in the Office of Division Counsel since July 2014. Prior that, Larrabee was an associate attorney at the general practice law firm Moran, Monfort P.L.C. from January to July 2014 and a researcher at Sheldon, Flood, and Hayward, a small criminal defense law firm from November 2013 to January 2014. Both are in Fairfax, Virginia.

From September 2005 to January 2010 Larrabee was an assistant district attorney in the Centre County District Attorney’s office where she handled both juvenile and adult criminal prosecutions. She was the sole prosecutor for cases of juvenile delinquency. Larrabee was responsible for a caseload of 70-80 cases per court term and was a representative to the DUI court team. She served as a court clerk to Judge David E. Grine from August 2004 to September 2005.

Larrabee earned her bachelor’s degree in history from Dickinson College in 2002 and her law degree from Pennsylvania State University in 2004.

The SLSO employs attorneys, professional support staff, law clerks and student staff.  It also offers semester-long legal assistant internships for UMass Amherst undergraduates.
