A campus campaign to assist residents of the Philippines affected last month by Typhoon Haiyan kicks off Friday, Dec. 6 at 8 p.m. with UMass Night Out: All Around the World in the Student Union Ballroom.
Representatives of the newly formed effort called UMAHON, a Tagalog word that means “to rise from the water,” will be collecting donations for the Red Cross. The event will feature cultural foods and performances by groups including the Student Association for the Multicultural Brazilian Alliance, Students of Caribbean Ancestry and the Dhadak dance team.
More events will soon be added to the schedule, including a Filipino food event hosted by Dining Services, and fundraising efforts will continue during Welcome Back Week 2014, Jan. 21–25.
To stay up-to-date on upcoming events or donate to the relief efforts, check the Volunteer UMass website at www.umass.edu/volunteer and click on the UMAHON logo.
