Lucinda (Lu) Butler retired July 7 after 26 years of service as an academic advisor in Continuing & Professional Education (CPE).
Some 50 friends and colleagues attended a reception for Butler in the Campus Center’s Amherst Room, offering congratulations and farewells. Several people who had worked with her over the years spoke in recognition of her care and nurturing of the many CPE students, particularly non-degree students.
“Being an academic advisor in CPE has been the best job I ever had,” said Butler. “For 26 years, I had great colleagues, interesting challenges, and the opportunity to work with thousands of students. Who could ask for more?"
Former CPE executive director Bill McClure spoke of his admiration for Butler’s skill in working with so many students and for her “taking them under her wing” to ensure that students received the needed support. Butler was thanked for her many years of dedication and in turn thanked UMass Amherst for what she termed “the best job I ever had.”
She said one of her plans in retirement is to spend more time with her grandchildren.
