Ira Bryck, director of the Family Business Center in Continuing and Professional Education, is the host of a new weekly radio show, “Taking Care of Business,” on WHMP in Northampton.
On the program, which debuted April 5, Bryck interviews business owners and expert advisors about the many aspects of starting and operating a company, focusing on Western Massachusetts. The show covers all industries, ages and sizes, said Bryck, and also on “‘solopreneurs,’ partnerships and then all the flavors of family business,” including multigenerational firms and those run by sibling teams and spouses.
The program was proposed by Joe O’Rourke, the head of advertising for the radio station.
“I’ve been working in radio for 30 years, and for many of them I’ve been saying that we should have a business show, and I’ve been in search of the right person to host it,” said O’Rourke, who said he met Bryck last December at the Family Business Center’s dinner forum. “After a few minutes of talking, I realized ‘this is the guy.’”
O’Rourke introduced Bryck to WHMP program manager Monte Belmonte and station manager Dave Musante and the show took off from there.
Founded by Bryck in 1994, the Family Business Center provides a non-commercial, interactive learning community for business families in Western New England and beyond. The center produces a family business newsletter and an advice column. Bryck also consults to family companies non-profits, and educational institutions to resolve conflict, create idea-gathering systems, professionalize meetings and management, better serve customers, plan strategy and marketing and “control the chaos.”
He is also the author of three plays about life in family business, presented as “edu-tainment” to forums of business families. His third play, “A Tough Nut to Crack,” is based on his 17 years in his family’s fourth-generation childrenswear business on Long Island, where he served simultaneously in every role from president to tailor.
“Taking Care of Business” airs at 11 a.m. on Saturdays at WHMP 1400 AM. Podcasts are available at the station’s website.
