The Multiband Pops Concert, which each year attracts a sell-out audience to enjoy a dozen music and dance ensembles plus the Minuteman Marching Band, will take place on Friday, Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall.
Presented by the department of music and dance, the annual event is coordinated by Jeffrey W. Holmes, professor and director of jazz and African-American music studies, and serves as a showcase of the department’s finest wind, brass, choral, percussion, and dance ensembles, including the Minuteman Marching Band.
As an added treat this year, the audience will get a preview of the band’s new uniforms, which the group will be wearing for the first time at the 2018 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, on New Year’s Day.
The flow of the concert is choreographed so that there are no breaks (except intermission), with the various performances taking place in an array of locations from within the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall.
Performing ensembles this year will include the UMass Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble I, University Dancers, UMass Amherst Symphony Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, Symphony Band, Chapel Jazz Ensemble, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, UMass Marimbas, Trumpet Ensemble, Trombone Choir, Horn Choir and Sax Duo.
The UMass Minuteman Marching Band, the “Pride and Class of New England,” performs during the second half of the concert.
Tickets for the Multiband Pops concert are $25 for the public and $18 for students and seniors, and can be purchased from the Fine Arts Center box office at 413/545-2511 or at fineartscenter.com/musicanddance.
