AMHERST, Mass. - Noted public law scholar and University of Massachusetts alumnus Bruce Allen Murphy will give a public lecture, "The Search for William O. Douglas," on Friday, May 14 at 3 p.m. in Room 917 of the campus center. The event is being held in honor of the retirement of Dean Alfange Jr., professor of political science, who was Murphy’s undergraduate mentor.
Murphy earned his bachelor’s degree from UMass in 1973, and is the Fred Morgan Kirby Professor of Civil Rights in the department of government and law at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania. He is the author of several books, including "The Brandeis/Frankfurter Connection" and "Fortas: The Rise and Ruin of a Supreme Court Justice." Murphy is currently working on a book about Douglas, the late Supreme Court Justice.
Alfange has taught at the University since 1967. He served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1971-75 and as acting provost in 1975.
A reception will follow Murphy’s lecture.
