AMHERST, Mass. - Robert DeConto has joined the department of geosciences at the University of Massachusetts. The announcement was made by Raymond Bradley, head of the department. "Understanding ocean circulation and its relationship to global climate changes is a critical area of research, and Rob DeConto is an expert in this area," said Bradley.
AMHERST, Mass. - Noted public law scholar and University of Massachusetts alumnus Bruce Allen Murphy will give a public lecture, "The Search for William O. Douglas," on Friday, May 14 at 3 p.m. in Room 917 of the campus center. The event is being held in honor of the retirement of Dean Alfange Jr., professor of political science, who was Murphy’s undergraduate mentor.
AMHERST, Mass. - A classic film of the feminist movement directed by University of Massachusetts School of Education professor Liane Brandon has been nominated for inclusion in the National Film Registry. It will be shown at a special screening in Washington, D.C., May 13, and Brandon has been invited to introduce it.
AMHERST, Mass. - On May 12 from 4 to 6 p.m., two monuments will be unveiled on the concourse level of the University of Massachusetts Murray D. Lincoln Campus Center. One monument honors faculty members who have received the Distinguished Teaching Award (DTA). The other honors teaching assistants who have won the same award. The DTA is the University’s highest award for teaching excellence. The event is free and open to the public.
AMHERST, Mass. - Researchers at the Political Economy Research Institute (PERI) at the University of Massachusetts have received two grants totaling $654,000 from the Ford Foundation. The grants will fund research on how to create stable, egalitarian growth in the global economy, and on how to combine environmental protection and poverty reduction in the U.S.
AMHERST, Mass. - Dhandapani Venkataraman has joined the chemistry faculty at the University of Massachusetts. He received his bachelor''s degree from the University of Madras, India, and his master''s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, also in Madras. He earned his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Venkataraman, who is called "D.V.," was a postdoctoral researcher at Cornell University and the University of California, Berkeley, before joining the UMass faculty.

AMHERST, Mass. - A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 13, at 3 p.m. in the Newman Center at the University of Massachusetts for UMass lacrosse player Eric Sopracasa, who died Wednesday, May 5, after being struck in the chest by a lacrosse ball at a practice session. Sopracasa, 21, a junior at UMass, was from Farmingville, N.Y.
