AMHERST, Mass. - The umbrellas weren’t necessary after all, as approximately 4,000 University of Massachusetts undergraduates received bachelor’s degrees in nearly 100 majors during the school’s 129th Commencement held this morning in Warren P. McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Graduate School held Commencement activities in the William D. Mullins Memorial Center on campus Saturday morning, May 22. Three honorary degrees were awarded and degrees were conferred upon 1,253 master''s and doctoral degree candidates. About 550 of the eligible candidates attended the ceremony along with some 4,000 family members and friends.
AMHERST, Mass. - Michele Cooke, whose father, grandfather, and great-grandfather all attended the University of Massachusetts, has joined the UMass department of geosciences. The announcement was made by Raymond Bradley, head of the department. "Michele Cooke builds on our existing strengths in structural geology and adds an important link to the engineering community," said Bradley.
AMHERST, Mass. - Noted public law scholar and University of Massachusetts alumnus Bruce Allen Murphy will give a public lecture, "The Search for William O. Douglas," on Friday, May 14 at 3 p.m. in Room 917 of the campus center. The event is being held in honor of the retirement of Dean Alfange Jr., professor of political science, who was Murphy’s undergraduate mentor.
AMHERST, Mass. - The department of English at the University of Massachusetts will host its first annual Awards Night Tues., May 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall. Highlights will include the announcement of the establishment of the William M. Bulger Scholarship in English for undergraduate students and the presentation of awards and prizes to students, alumni, and colleagues.
AMHERST, Mass. - Rudolph Crew, chancellor of the Board of Education of the City of New York and a UMass alumnus, will deliver the main address at the 129th Commencement of the University of Massachusetts, to be held at 10:30 a.m. on Sun. May 23, in Warren P. McGuirk Alumni Stadium. Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Jane Swift will attend the ceremonies to deliver the greetings of the commonwealth. Approximately 4,000 undergraduates are candidates for bachelor’s degrees.
AMHERST, Mass. - Johnnetta B. Cole, the first African-American woman to serve as president of Spelman College since its founding in 1881, has been named this spring''s University of Massachusetts Eleanor Bateman Alumni Scholar in Residence. She will visit the campus April 27-May 1 to lecture, speak to classes, and meet informally with faculty and students.
