AMHERST, Mass. - Aleksandr "Sasha" Senderovich, a senior at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, has received the first prize in this year''s Prize in Ethics Essay Contest of the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity. His essay, Tatyana''s Glory; or The Birth Pangs of a Civil Society. The Ethics of Normalcy in Present-day Russia, was selected from 433 entries submitted by students from more than 400 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. The Foundation will be honoring Senderovich at a reception in New York City later this year.

AMHERST, Mass. - Civil engineering students at the University of Massachusetts Amherst will host the New England regional concrete canoe race and competition Sun. April 27 at the Oxbow Marina in Northampton. At least six concrete canoes will be launched and raced by teams from regional colleges; the best time for photographs will be from 10 a.m. to noon. The event will be held rain or shine.

AMHERST, Mass. - At the Earthfoods Cafe, a student-run business at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, customers can purchase a variety of vegetarian dishes, and then eat them with compostable utensils and plates. The cafe is one of eight student-run businesses at the University that all make enough money to cover their costs. At the same time, operating the businesses provides students with valuable hands-on experience far beyond what they learn in the classroom.
