The Graduate Student Recruitment
and Retention at the Graduate School has selected the Neuroscience
and Behavior Program as a recipient of a two-year minority targeted
fellowship. NSB thanks Dr. Sandra Petersen for her efforts in writing
and submitting the diversity fellowship proposal. Dr. Petersen states
"We have established direct connections with scientists at excellent
historically minority institutions (Howard University, Hampton University
and Jackson State University). This fall teams of two faculty will
visit these institutions in order to meet faculty and to establish
a collegial, collaborative relationships with these important student
mentors. We will also meet individually with Honors Program students
to inform them of unique opportunities in the NSB program. To reach
a larger audience, we will give seminars on our own research and
approaches. This will enable us to establish the critical personal
contacts that are so important in attracting students".
Ms. Jamy Gaynor received a
Diversity Fellowship. She will be working in the laboratory of Dr.
John Moore.
Ms. Govini Mohan received
a 12-month Northeast Alliance Graduate Fellowship for 2001-2002.
The Alliance Fellowships are being offered under the auspices of
the Northeast Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate
(NEAGEP), a grant-funded program sponsored by the National Science
Foundation. The purpose of the NEAGEP is to increase the number
of underrepresented mnority students enrolled in doctoral programs
in science, mathematics and engineering.
Graduate Student Grants Service
The Graduate
Student Grant Services (GSGS), located at UMass helps promote
the scholarly activities of graduate students and postdoctoral scholars
who seek extramural support for their studies and research. GSGS
provides a variety of funding opportunity information services,
training workshops and individual and departmental consultations.
Check out the monthly newsletter
entitled GRANTSCAPE
for a current listing of student fellowship opportunities. GSGS
provides access to some excellent resources including two key databases
of funding opportunities: The
Illinois Research Information Service (IRIS) and Community
of Science. For those in the science disciplines, GSGS has recently
subscribed to Nextwave, an
online publication that covers scientific training, career development,
and the science job market.
