Cognitive abilities of nonhuman primates

Cognitive abilities of nonhuman primates

Do monkeys have a theory of mind? Can they understand invisible displacements or how tools work or recognize themselves in mirrors? Cognition in monkeys is just one of the areas of research being studied at the UMass Primate Laboratory under the direction of Melinda Novak. We are also concerned with the effects of early rearing experiences on the development of social and cognitive competence in primates, and we are conducting a project at the New England Regional Primate Research Center on the causes and treatment of abnormal behavior.
