Jumping spider in a grassy field on the UMass campus

Phidippus clarus is a jumping spider with excellent vision that captures prey by leaping upon it. The Jakob lab has been studying a number of aspects of jumping spider behavior, including spatial learning. The photo shows a spider on an artificial nest tube that has been placed in the field. Spiders colonize these tubes and construct silken nests within them, to which they return at the end of the foraging day. We are exploring the cues that spiders use to find their way back.
