The Interface Between Cognition and Emotion in Aging The aging brain is capable of amazing resiliency and strength. I am interested in how persons successfully navigate the challenges of aging and in particular, how changes in cognition and emotion interact as persons get older. I hope that results of this work will provide clues for successful aging. I study the interface between cognition and emotion in healthy older adults and also in patients suffering from dementia. Dementia is a generic term for progressive neurodegenerative diseases that affect cognition, functioning, and emotion, primarily in older individuals. My work on healthy individuals and patient populations are synergistic. Results from research with dementia patients pose interesting and important questions to pursue in healthy older adults. Conversely, new assessment methodologies used with healthy older adults promise to open new avenues of exploration and assessment in patients with neurodegenerative disease. Methodologies used in my lab are varied but draw heavily from neuropsychology,
cognitive psychology, and personality psychology. I hope to extend my
work to include neurophysiological correlates of emotion experiences in
older and younger adults in the future. For further information on current research projects and important websites in neuropsychology, neuropsychiatry, and gerontology, please visit Rebecca's personal homepage. |
