COLLABORATIVE EVENTS

To further enhance the musical experience of our students, faculty members create interesting concert programs that bring together different ensembles from the Department as well as the talents of other artists and academics from around the campus. Here are some examples:

MULTIBAND POPS
Now in its 34th year, Multiband Pops is a fast-paced showcase event that includes performances by eight or more ensembles. This annual event, which usually takes place on Homecoming Weekend in the fall, often includes our Chapel Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble I, Minuteman Marching Band, Percussion Ensemble, Symphony Band, Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Wind Ensemble. The University Dancers/UMass Amherst, an ensemble of advanced dance majors, also performs at Multiband Pops. The event attracts a sell-out audience each year that includes students, parents, faculty, administrators, alumni, community members and families from around New England and the United States.

CHORAL SPECTRUM
Choral Spectrum presents UMass Amherst choral ensembles in concert with the choirs of Massachusetts high schools and community music schools. Campus ensembles often include the Chamber Choir, Chorale, Madrigal Singers, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Women's Choir and Men's Choir.

OTHER COLLABORATIONS
In March, 2004, the UMass Amherst Orchestra performed Beethoven's Mass in C with the UMass Amherst Choirs. In recent years, the Jazz Ensemble performed Collaborations in Sound & Motion with the University Dancers. The UMass Amherst Opera Workshop collaborated with the Five College Early Music Program and the UMass Amherst Theater Department to present Claudio Monteverdi's L'Orfeo. The Percussion Ensemble and Dance and Astronomy Departments created a program celebrating the Pleiades. The Orchestra performed Bernstein's Chichester Psalms with the Chamber Choir and Chorale.

“The applied instruction was really strong; that is why I went to UMass. The ensembles were outstanding. I had very diverse experiences, which turned out to be what I have to do in my job where I conduct the wind ensemble, teach music theory, applied sax, flute and clarinet.”

Michael Sakash BM '97
