Ronald Steele

Professor Ronald Steele, who founded the University Orchestra program, has passed away.

A native of New Jersey, Ronald Steele was devoted to both music and photography from an early age. After a tour of duty with the US Air Force Symphony Orchestra and graduate study in violin performance at the University of Michigan, Steele joined the faculty at the University of Massachusetts in 1963. Active as a conductor as well as a performer throughout his career, he was widely known on campus for his popular course, an introduction to music, which was transformed into an award-winning, nationally-syndicated radio show, The Listening Room, in the mid-1970s. A founder of the UMass Symphony Orchestra (1963) and the Five College Chamber Soloists, Steele resumed his passion for photography in the late 1970s, opening the Ron Steele Photography Studio, which became an increasing creative outlet after his retirement from the university in 1997.

An Invitation from Laura Klock

Laura Klock

Calling all horns! Won't you join us for a final chance to meet and play on the weekend of April 11 & 12, while you're here on the UMass campus for the 75th Anniversary celebrations?

We'll have an open horn choir reading at 2pm on Saturday, April 12 in Room 36, between the 12:30pm alumni lunch in the Campus Center Amherst Room and the 4pm concert in the FAC Concert Hall.

If you haven't played in a while, dust off your instrument or let me know if you need to borrow one. I can send out music ahead if you contact me, but it's just to have some fun and a little horn-time!   In any case, I hope you'll come to say hi even if you're there just to see fellow classmates and renew friendships.

If you'll email me by April 6 to let me know you're coming, I'll be sure to have enough music for all.  Otherwise, just show up and surprise me!
Looking forward to catching up with you all,

Laura Klock (laklock@music.umass.edu)

PS I'm retiring in May and we're having terrific finalists on our campus to interview, play and give master classes.  UMass has been a great place to be for these many years, and I'm now happy to give someone else a turn!

FLUTE PLAYERS' INVITATION

Flutes!  Come join us for a low-key, fun reading session of a variety of music for multiple flutes after the luncheon on Saturday, April 12 at 2 P.M. until shortly before our concert at 4 P.M.  All are welcome!!  We hope to see you all there!  We'll meet in Room 155.  If you have any questions, please email Marilyn Kushick, mkushick@music.umass.edu
