Graduate Teaching Assistantships & Financial Aid
Graduate Teaching Assistantships
All graduate students entering the Department are automatically considered for teaching assistantships (TA-ships) in their own studio/area of concentration. These are few in number, and highly competitive.
In addition, there are a number of "Gen-Ed" TA-ships that support large undergraduate General Education music classes. Duties typically include lecture support, discussion section leading, grading and tutoring. All grad students who have not received a TA-ship in their own area are strongly encouraged to appy for a Gen-Ed TA-ship. These positions are issued through the office of the Graduate Program Director, Prof. Erinn Knyt, and are also highly competitive. We seek intellectually curious students who are motivated, responsible, and who demonstrate excellent communication skills. Click on the link for a TA-ship Application Form (pdf), Deadline: Feb. 1, 2020 for priority consideration for 2020-21.
These awards entail a 10 to 20 hour-per-week work assignment with an hourly wage in the range of $28-30 (was $28.59 for the 2018-19 academic year). Assignments last for the 38 weeks of the academic year, beginning in early September and ending in late May, with stipends totaling $10,864 to $21,728 (2018-19 amounts). In addition, tuition, curriculum, and health fees are waived. Residual mandatory fees (see Graduate Assistantship Office webpage) remain the responsibility of the graduate student. Graduate employees are also entitled to a number of benefits through the Graduate Employee Organization. Assistantships are available in a variety of undergraduate courses, applied studios, class piano, collaborative piano, music theory, music history, ensembles, ensemble management, and marching band.
The Graduate String Quartet program offers teaching assistantships to four violinists, two violists and two cellists to form two string quartets. Please see the webpage or contact Violin Professor Elizabeth Chang for more information.
