Graduate Certificates in Music Theory Pedagogy and Music History Pedagogy
These graduate certificate programs will prepare students to teach music theory or music history in a variety of educational settings. They are intended primarily for graduate performance majors who might teach these topics at a summer music school, at a college or as part of their private studio lessons (to give just a few examples). Music education majors who might one day teach AP Music Theory could also benefit from the certificate program. These credentials will certify that students have acquired professional teaching skills in theory or history, making them more competitive on the job market.
Non-matriculating students will usually complete a certificate within one academic year (two semesters). Matriculating master's students will usually distribute a certificate's four required courses (12 credits) evenly over two years of study, taking one course per semester.

APPLYING TO THE PROGRAM:
There is no formal application for these Certificate programs. It is assumed that MM students who enroll in MUSIC 795B-Teaching Practicum (see below) are pursuing the certificate, and will automatically be awarded it upon completion if they are eligible and have fulfilled all requirements. In general, students MUST complete a pedagogy class (MUSIC 615 or 648) by their third semester in order to take the Practicum in their fourth; except in some cases where the pedagogy class is not offered until the spring.
Please fill out the Certificate Eligibility Form on the Graduate School website, have it signed by the Graduate Program Director (Prof. Brent Auerbach), and submit to the Graduate Student Service Center, 534 Goodell, by the appropriate deadline listed on the form.
Matriculated and nonmatriculated students must have earned a baccalaureate degree (e.g. BA or BMus) with a music concentration before beginning coursework.
Music Theory Pedagogy: Pass all sections of the Graduate Theory Diagnostic Exam before beginning coursework.
Music History Pedagogy: Take the Graduate History Diagnostic Exam. Students who fail two or more sections of the exam must enroll in and pass MUSIC 593S: The History of Styles in Western Music.
Earn a grade of B (3.0) or higher in each course used toward a certificate.
