Johanna Frances Yunker received her Ph.D. in Musicology in 2012 from Stanford University, with the support of a Stanford Humanities Center Geballe Fellowship.

Johanna Yunker
Her doctoral research was also supported by a DAAD research grant and a fellowship from the Center for Exile and Postwar Studies at the Universität der Künste in Berlin, Germany, where she was in residence in 2009-2010.  Prior to coming to UMass, she taught at Lamar University and was a research associate of the Five Colleges, Inc.

Her current research is on music in films made by the East German studio Deutsche Film Aktiengesellschaft (DEFA).  For this research, she is drawing extensively from materials held at UMass’s DEFA Film Library.  Yunker’s other interests include the interaction of politics and gender in East German music, with a focus on operas composed and staged by women.  She has published essays and reviews in Twentieth-Century Music, The Journal of Singing, the forthcoming collection Classical Music in the German Democratic Republic (Camden House), and the forthcoming Handbook of East German Cinema: The DEFA Legacy (Walter De Gruyter Press).  She has also presented papers at international conferences in Europe and the USA, including at the national meetings of the American Musicological Society and of the German Studies Association.
