Ph.D., University of Toledo; M.M., University of Michigan; B.M., Susquehanna University. Dr. Smar is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Education, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of teaching methodology, curriculum design, and assessment. He is Coordinator of Student Teaching in Music, supervises student teachers, and serves as an advisor to undergraduate music education students.

Smar regularly presents sessions at national and regional conferences including those sponsored by the Music Educator's National Conference, New England Educational Assessment Network, and Massachusetts' Music Educators Association. His research interests include urban music education; belief systems in teaching; and the impact of organizational factors on education, specifically in the areas of arts curriculum and assessment. In addition, he serves as a consultant to school districts and as a member of advisory boards including the Massachusetts' Department of Education Arts Education Advisory Council.

Prior to teaching at UMass, Dr. Smar taught instrumental music for 20 years at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels for the Toledo Public Schools. During much of that time, he concurrently administered a collaborative multi-arts education program serving a diverse population of approximately 40,000 students, 300 staff members and 21 arts agencies. Smar was also the Conductor/Music Director of the Toledo Junior Youth Orchestra for 13 years, and a faculty member at the University of Toledo where he taught trombone and euphonium, and performed with the faculty brass quintet.

Dr. Smar maintains an active performing schedule along with his teaching, service, and scholarly activity. He appears regularly with musical ensembles throughout New England on the tenor trombone, alto trombone, and euphonium. He plays in the pits of local productions and performs regularly with the Massachusetts Wind Orchestra, Commonwealth Opera, Brattleboro Music Center Orchestra, Pioneer Valley Symphony, Clarion Brass Quintet, and Amherst Brass Ensemble, as well as other music groups in the region.

The Martha Holden Jennings Foundation, Music Educators National Conference, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Ohio Department of Education, Northwest Ohio Art Education Association, and Bowsher High School have recognized Dr. Smar for his teaching or contributions to arts education.
