Emiliano Ricciardi,
formerly a Lecturer in the Music and Dance Department, has been appointed Assistant Professor. He holds a Ph.D. in Musicology from Stanford University, which he completed in 2013 with the support of a Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowship.

He holds also an M.Phil. in Historical Musicology from the University of Cambridge, UK, and a Diploma in Violin Performance from the Conservatory of Rome, Italy.

His main research area is the Italian madrigal, with a focus on the settings of Torquato Tasso's poetry. He has published articles and reviews in this area in The Journal of Musicology, Cambridge Opera Journal, Renaissance Quarterly, Oxford Bibliographies Online and Notes, and has presented papers at international conferences in the U.S. and Europe. In collaboration with Stanford University and UMass Amherst, he is preparing a digital edition of the madrigals on Tasso’s poetry. His secondary research area is the reception and practice of twelve-tone music in fascist Italy. He has presented papers on this topic at international conferences and at the annual meeting of the American Musicological Society.

Ricciardi is a violinist and an avid chamber musician and has performed widely in the U.S. and Europe with leading ensembles and soloists. He was awarded the Lauro De Bosis fellowship in Italian Studies at Harvard University, and was in residence there during the spring of 2015.
