Gary S. Karpinsky (UMass)

The Medium and the Message (Alanis Morissette's Hidden Song ["Your House"] and the Structure of Concealment)

Free & open to the public; Old Chapel Conference Room

This paper examines the layers of secrecy in Alanis Morissette’s song “Your House,”which was hidden on her 1995 album Jagged Little Pill, tucked at the end of an unlisted track, after an uncredited reprise of an earlier track, following a minute of silence.
After briefly tracing the history of hidden tracks and examining various methods of hiding tracks on vinyl and compact discs, the paper compares the official twelve-track listings for Jagged Little Pill to the thirteen audio tracks that appear on the disc itself, revealing the unlisted track. Waveforms extracted from the disc are used to show the hidden song within this unlisted thirteenth track.
