Dance Program
Performance Opportunities
There are numerous choreographic and performance opportunities both at the University
and in the Five College Dance Department. Students may audition for any concert produced by a
Five College institution. These include faculty and student concerts, graduate thesis concerts,
and the Five College Dance Department Faculty Concert.
The University produces three concerts each year, and participates in the American College Dance Festival.
In addition, student organizations such as Alive With Dance and
The Musical Theater Guild produce concerts and musicals that give both choreographic and
dance performance opportunities to UMass Amherst students.
Sankofa Project celebrates African Roots in American Dance
through intensive summer study and choreographic residencies at UMass Amherst
accompanied by performances and events celebrating, through dance, the diversity of the world
in which we live.
University Dancers/UMass Amherst
A select group of talented performers, this ensemble is featured annually in its own concert
and January tour throughout the Commonwealth. From time to time, the Dancers tour abroad.
The repertory includes works choreographed by guest choreographers and members of the Five College
Dance Faculty.
Student Concerts
All dance majors are required to choreograph at least once while at the University and have
their work produced in a concert setting. Because auditions for student concerts are open to
all university students, the concerts provide performance opportunities to both dance majors
and non-majors.
