To be the leader in the nation for innovative and creative approaches to music and dance in higher education.

OUR MISSION:

The mission of the Department of Music and Dance is to serve the citizens of the Commonwealth through academic excellence in the preparation of music performers, music scholars, and music teachers for service to the Commonwealth, the Northeast region, and the nation. The Department is committed:

To provide the finest music education possible within a culture of innovation, creativity, and experimentation.

To achieve national prominence in scholarly and creative activity.

To catalyze the quality of life in the community, the Commonwealth, and the region.

To expand and increase collaborative efforts on the campus, among the Five Colleges, and with arts organizations in the Commonwealth, the region, and the nation.

The Department achieves this mission through the highest quality solo and ensemble performances, teaching, creative activities, and research activities. These activities, in particular the ensemble performances, are important aspects of the public's perception of university quality.
