Giving to the Department of Music & Dance

Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of Dance,

This year the Dance Program has had cause for MANY celebrations!

With your help, we will continue to provide the artistic activities which enrich our students and the University community.

This past year, 2013-14, has been an incredible one of successes for UMass Dance.  We were privileged to have Jennifer Hart, from the Austin Ballet, set a new work, Before/After, on University Dancers (our faculty/guest artist concert) this year.  Hart has been hailed by critics as a choreographer “with an imagination so exuberant that one could not be sure how one movement led to the next” and “not only inventive but heart-rending.”  The piece was performed at the New England American College Dance Conference, and was chosen to be on the final gala concert.

From there, Hart's dance was chosen from among a small number in the country, to be performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. in June 2014.  We brought back Ms. Hart for a second round of rehearsals and the piece was performed more tightly and brilliantly than ever!  This was quite an honor for our Department.

It takes almost no time at all to make a gift. You can give by credit card or check; you can give the full amount or in installments. Right now you can make an online donation to Friends of Dance.

For other funds, such as Dance Artistic Endeavors or the Richard Jones Scholarship, see our Giving Options page for more information.

Sarah Elaz's Duette

Speaking of ACDA, the other piece we brought to be adjudicated at the conference was senior Sarah Elaz’s Duette, which also made the gala concert.  Duette was a stunning work which featured two pairs of dancers reflecting a simultaneous inner and outer conversation.  UMass dancers were also seen in Chris Aikins’ (Smith faculty) piece, How Did I Get Here?, which also made the gala concert.  We were well-represented in performance excellence at the conference!

We were particularly happy to bring up Lisa Chow and Renee Davis, of Desert Dance Theatre in Phoenix, to help revise and reconstruct a powerful work about racism, misogyny, and homophobia, entitled Judgments.

The performance of the work coincided oddly with the passing of Nelson Mandela, whose words and images and writings were part of the video and soundtrack that was part of this half-evening work.

It was a very powerful and moving experience for all in the audience, and presented a wonderful set of lessons to share with schoolchildren on our annual schools tour this year.

We ask that you contribute generously to our Friends of Dance fund which helps to support these and other glorious activities. To make a secure online gift to Friends of Dance, click here. Or you may send a check, made out to UMass Amherst with Friends of Dance in the memo line to: UMass Amherst, Development Office, Memorial Hall, 134 Hicks Way, Amherst, MA 01003. Or call our Gifts office, 413-545-4721, with your credit card handy.

Thank you in advance for your generosity.

On behalf of the Dance faculty and with joy in dance!
