High
school seniors and college transfer students who satisfy the University's
admission standards are accepted into the music program on the basis
of auditions held on campus on announced dates throughout
the school year. Students should schedule an audition as early as
possible, even before submitting the application for academic acceptance.
Auditions may take place prior to academic acceptance to the University;
however, Music Department faculty cannot hear an audition before
a University application has been submitted. Please note: acceptance
into the Music Department requires both a successful audition and
academic acceptance by the University.

GRADUATE
ADMISSIONS
Application forms for admission to graduate study are distributed
by the Graduate School and must be submitted by October 1
for spring admission and February 1 for fall admission. Graduate
applicants should notify the Graduate Program Director, Department
of Music and Dance (413-545-2106), and the Graduate School of their
intent to apply and to request information about the Department's
entrance and audition requirements. Not all graduate music degree
programs require a performing audition for acceptance. When an audition
is necessary there is no required repertory. Applicants are expected
to perform in various period-styles within the repertory of their
instrument/voice, before March 1st.

SUBMITTING
A TAPED AUDITION
When the music applicant lives at some distance, a video taped audition
may be accepted in lieu of a personal appearance (audio cassettes
or CDs may accompany the video tape), but students are strongly
advised to audition on campus whenever possible, especially if a
scholarship is in question. All videos/tapes/CDs should be submitted with a
completed String Audition Request Form or Non-string Audition Request Form and a listing of the program performed.
The Department reserves the right to require a live audition in
addition to a recording before granting final admission to any degree
program.
