The Center for Multicultural Advancement & Student Success provides academic support, cultural enrichment, student development as well as support for institutional diversity on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus.

Whether you're looking for peer mentoring, social connection, exposure to national student leadership conferences, help navigating offices of the Bursar, Registrar or Financial Aid, or more - our office is here to ensure that you have the resources to thrive in an inclusive and multicultural environment during your time at the university.

Our Vision

The Center for Multicultural Advancement and Student Success (CMASS) is a student centered learning agency within the division of the Center for Student Development. By serving as a campus resource that facilitates and promotes a learning community that acknowledges, appreciates and values multicultural undersanding and exchange, we strive to advance the personal, academic and professional success of diverse populations of students, staff, faculty and the larger university community. Our Mission

The Center for Multicultural Advancement and Student Success is comprise of four integrated functional areas: Academic Support, Student Development, Cultural Enrichment and Institutional Diversity. Using a student centered approach which values collaboration, dialogue and action, the programs and services offered engage first generation and ALANA (African, Latino/Latina, Asian and Native American students and colleagues in courageous, inclusive and supportive learning experiences. We aim to create partnerships and collaborative possibilities, provide resources and advocate for students of color and other underrepresented constituencies to ensure academic success and personal growth.

Our Core ELEMENTS (Values)

The Center for Multicultural Advancement & Student Success respects and values diversity in its many forms. By creating an inclusive student centered community we share the fundamental belief in the value of educationally purposeful learning and its ability to transform lives. We fulfill our values through:

Diversity, Multiculturalism and Social Justice:

* Fostering a commitment to service students of color and other marginalized groups.

* Engaging the campus community in cross cultural and intra-group dialogues to increase and gain new knowledge related to diversity and social justice.

*Promoting activities ad programs that are socially just and supportive of a diverse and multicultural community.

Transformative Learning:

*Engaging students in transformative learning through personal growth, inclusive, intentional and innovative co-curricular experiences.

*Promoting cultural, social, academic and creative expressions where students gain a deeper understanding of their own skills, capacities and competences, especially the development of critical thinking skills.

*Challenging previously held beliefs and assumptions by assisting students to create a more comprehensive perspective of society.

Leadership
*Creating opportunities to provide interactive learning opportunities that allow students to author his/her blueprint for life beyond college.

*Promoting leadership models that include and respect the individual, group and community.

*Empowering students to become effective and active change agents.

Collaboration

*Fostering collaboration with other departments and campus constituents to continuously invest in acknowledging and building a diverse campus.

*Building relationships with community partners and surrounding schools to increase their awareness of CMASS while attracting more ALANA (African, Latino/Latino, Asian and Native American) multiracial and/or first generation students to attend UMass Amherst.
