Student Leaders Go To DC

Twelve UMass Amherst students attended the 24th Annual National Black Student Leadership Development Conference (NBSLDC), held from Jan. 8 to Jan. 11 in Washington, D.C.

It was an exciting experience, as Genevieve Forges reported, "I am proud to say that I went to the Carroll F. S. Hardy National Black Student Leadership Development Conference. The many keynote speakers and wonderful workshops helped inspire me to be a better leader. The theme ordinary people equipped with extraordinary leadership: 'We will change the world' spoke leaps and bounds to me. It helped me to feel like I am more than just a nursing student at UMass; I am a leader with potential to be great if I push myself. Rosa Clemente the hip-hop activist was an amazing keynote speaker because she talked about what was on her mind. She expressed that we are making great progress towards the greater good, but we cannot ignore the everyday people who are suffering and dying by the hand of injustice. Her words were strong and her candor was unapologetic. Her speech definitely caused me to pause. Furthermore, though we came to the conference as associates, we left the conference as friends. As different as we all are, we were able to connect and have a great time at the conference together. Overall, I think this was a wonderful conference, and I feel that I am a better leader from this experience."
