Step 1. Download Netscape 4.8
Installing this version of Netscape (along with the MDL Chime, Step
2) will allow you to view all of the resources described here.
Note: later versions of Netscape (for example, Netscape 7) will
not work for viewing any of the molecules. Internet Explorer
will only work for a limited set, as noted in the resources on the Explore
the Molecules page.
- At the Netscape Archive download site (use link below) choose the
appropriate version of Netscape 4.8 (Windows or Mac). Note: for Mac,
Netscape 4.8 will work in Classic or OS 9 or earlier.
- Note the location where your computer is saving the Netscape download.
- Then return to this page and proceed to Step 2.
Download
Netscape 4.8 at the Netscape Archived Products
site.

| |
Step 2. Install Netscape 4.8
- Double-click the Netscape Installer you downloaded in Step 1.
- Follow the directions of the installer.
- Accept all the defaults, clicking Next, Yes, Continue, etc. UNTIL you get to "Netscape Desktop Preference Options", where you will want to UNCHECK "Make Netscape Communicator my default browser". Good to uncheck all 3 options here.
- Complete the installation by clicking Next, Install, accepting all defaults.
- Say No to viewing the ReadMe file.

Step 3. Download MDL Chime
MDL Chime enables compatible browsers to display molecular structures in 3D.
- Register with MDL (use link below). This is required in order to download MDL Chime.
- MDL will send you a password immediately via email. Record your password in a convenient place— MDL does not let you change it.
- Log in at the MDL home page (use link below) using your new MDL username and password.
- On the left-hand side of the page, under "Download No-Fee Software" click the link for MDL Chime.
- Use the pull-down menu to select "MDL Chime".
- Choose the appropriate version:
- for Windows, click the first choice "MDL® Chime 2.6 SP6 for Windows."
- for Macs, scroll down and click "MDL® Chime 2.6 SP3 Installer for Macintosh." Note that Chime is not compatible with OS X, and will require Classic or OS 9 or earlier.
- ignore any warnings that Chime is not compatible with Netscape 4.8 or with Windows 98. It works fine with both.
- Note the location where your computer is saving the Chime download.

Step 4. Install Chime
- On Windows, if you have previously installed MDL Chime, uninstall the old version: Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. If Chime was installed in both Internet Explorer and Netscape, be sure to uninstall it separately from each of these.
- Double-click the Chime installer to start the installation.
- Windows: simply accept all the defaults, clicking Next, Yes, Continue etc. until finished. (There will be a bit of a delay while the "Wizard" sets up the installation. This delay is normal.)
- You may need to enter your name and "company" (name of your school will do).
- The only thing you should uncheck is at the last box, "Yes I want to view the release notes"
- Macintosh: You must select the correct plug-ins folder manually!
- A dialog box appears, entitled "Install software into". Typically there are several different "plug-ins" folders shown in this dialog box. Only one of them is correct! If you have multiple copies or versions of Netscape installed, be sure to choose the one where you want to install Chime.
- Examine each "plug-ins" folder in turn and select the one that is under Netscape Communicator 4.8. Later versions of Netscape will not work. Internet Explorer will not work.
- Click Finish. (If the Chime Release Notes appear, just close them.)
Note: On Windows, the above procedure installs Chime in both Netscape
and Internet Explorer, enabling you to use Internet Explorer for resources
designated as being compatible with it. On Macintosh, Chime is not compatible
with Internet Explorer.

Step 5. Start Netscape 4.8 and Test Chime.
- The first time you use Netscape 4.8, you must follow prompts to
create a "Profile".
- Windows: you don't need to fill in any of the
blanks -- just hit Next repeatedly, then Finish.
- Mac: you may need to type a character into some
blanks to proceed.
- Before it starts, Netscape will again ask you to make it your default
browser. Check "Do NOT perform this check in future," and
click No.
- Return to this Install page and visit
the Test Page to make sure that Chime is installed and working.
Tips for Netscape use:
- When you open Netscape, close the small box listing Navigator, Inbox,
Newsgroups, etc. -- you will never need it.
- Keep the Netscape Communicator shortcut placed on your desktop,
but delete two other icons it creates, "AOL Instant Messenger"
and "Free AOL".
- Make it easy to get to BioMolecular Explorer 3D in Netscape
4.8:
- In Netscape 4.8, with the BioMolecular Explorer3D Welcome page
showing, open the Edit menu from the top left, and select Preferences.
In the Home Page box (2nd from top), click the button "Use
Current Page". Click OK at the bottom.
- In Netscape 4.8, bookmark the Welcome page, or any BioMolecular
Explorer 3D pages you choose (visit the desired page, open
the Bookmark menu and click Add).
You are ready to roll!
