The State Data Center generates map products for a variety of geographic areas and for many
social, economic, and demographic variables. Our most common mapping applications involve
data from the U.S. Census and regions within Massachusetts or New England.

The Data Center produces two types of maps: reference and thematic. Reference maps display
geographic boundaries or convey solely geographic information. Thematic maps display the geographic
distribution of one or more mapped variables, and often appear in the form of choroplethic maps--maps
with colored or shaded regions. Other types of thematic maps include dot density and proportional
symbol maps (such as bars that vary in proportion to the magnitude of a variable).

We also receive and distribute Census TIGER Line files for Massachusetts from the Census Bureau which we use to create base maps.

The geographic regions we can map include (but are not limited to):

  • New England Cities and Towns
  • Congressional Districts
  • Massachusetts State Legislative Districts
  • Selected Massachusetts Administrative Areas
  • Metropolitan Statistical Areas
  • Counties
  • ZIP Codes
  • Boston Redevelopment Authority Neighborhoods and Planning Districts
  • Voting Precincts
  • Census Tracts
  • Block Groups
  • Blocks
Most of our Massachusetts administrative area maps along with a limited number of maps based
on the 1990 Census and post-1990 population estimates are currently available for printing.
The table below contains examples of some of our reference and thematic maps.
